PRESENT PERFECT VS. PAST SIMPLE
The simple past is used for actions that have ended in the past, even if they have occurred in the recent past. With the present perfect the action is related to the present.
Examples:
The simple past:
- Did you eat breakfast this morning?
- I had three exams this week.
The perfect present:
- Have you eaten breakfast yet this morning?
- I have had three exams already this week.
Remember also that we use the present
perfect for actions at a time in the non-specific past. If you want to limit
the time of the actions in a period, we can use expressions of time like
"last year".
Examples:
The simple past:
- I went to Cuba last year.
- They saw a movie yesterday.
The perfect present:
- I have been to Cuba in the last year.
- They have seen a movie.
They have seen a movie yesterday.
♣️Note: Look at the difference between the
first two examples. In both, the expression "last year" is used, but
in the second example we add the preposition "in". In this case,
"last year" means within a period of time when the action occurred,
it is not a specific time. Without the preposition "in", "last
year" implies a specific time.
